Madrid Shopping
As the nation's capital, Madrid not surprisingly offers the best range of up-market shopping outlets in Spain. But these make up just a small proportion of the city's shopping charms. Madrid's 50000 stores also sell everything from paintings and ceramics to guitars and bullfighters' costumes
Salamanca DistrictIf it's designer labels you're after head for the eastern district of Salamanca. Here you'll find the logos of Prada, Armani, and Louis Vuitton, and all the others. More interesting are the boutiques of trendy Spanish designers like Sybilla, Amaya Arzuaga, and Victorio & Lucchino. Another good shopping area in Madrid is Alonso Martinez, it quite similar to Salamanca in terms of style and what is available.
Fuencarral St - Gran ViaWhen you tire of the brand name stores, the area around the Street Fuencarral is a pleasant one to visit. It's home to a bunch of trendy boutiques selling both men´s and women´s clothes. There's also an indoor market hawking clothing, bags and jewellery. For shoes, head to the Street Augusto Figueroa. It's lined with mostrarios selling designer's shoe samples at half price or less.
Madrid's equivalent to Bond Street is the famous Gran Via. Gran Via is another good place for a bit of shopping. Apart from shops there are many hotels, restaurants, and sights nearby.
El Corte InglesOn any shopping trip in Spain it is worth popping into El Corte Ingles. El Corte Ingles is a large upmarket department store although be careful there are more than six El Corte Ingles in Madrid. On each floor there is a different department. Women wears, men's wear, children wear, and toys, home furnishings, there is even a floor with gardening tools, DIY tools, and garden furniture. There is often a restaurant or two in each El Corte Ingles. Books, music, films, cosmetics, the list is endless. El Corte Ingles is like the John Lewis of Spain and highly recommended on your shopping trip in Madrid.
El Corte Ingles is the main Department Store in Spain. If there is something you need to buy and you are not sure where to buy it the El Corte Ingles will most definitely stock it. Every Spanish city has many El Corte Ingles, this is the Spanish equivalent to an upmarket Deberhams. The El Corte Ingles has everything you could desire in price range affordable to desirable. El Corte Ingles is usually open 10am-9.30pm from Monday to Saturday.
El RastroShopping in Spain would be incomplete without visiting one of the street markets. Sunday morning is the time for the El Rastro street market on the Calle de Ribera de Curtidores which is closed to traffic. You can buy everything from squawking chickens to pirated DVDs to antiques and smutty post cards. If you are looking for painting, go to the Conde de barajas Square.
